Rendezvouz with Dr. Mandi

Before coming to NITIE, I used to google a lot about "life of an MBA student", MBA colleges, NITIE, its activities, placements, almost everything related to it. That's when I came across a video of Dr. Mandi from NITIE. Here's the link Dr Mandi at his best.

After coming to NITIE, I found that everything that I had read about MBA was very true. The endless lectures, infinite number of assignments, case studies, presentations and the list goes on. But one thing that was unexpected was Dr. Mandi's class. It was full of surprises. As soon as he entered our class, he removed his sandals and sat down on the podium. We were all very surprised. What followed was even more surprising. He asked all of us to do the same. I thought he must be an old fashioned guy who was fascinated by the Gurukul style of teaching. But that was just the beginning. There was a lot more to come.

He then threw a soft ball, a butterfly and a few other stuff towards us. What they were for will be revealed later. He seemed to be in love with our desi culture and our language Hindi. We asked him about Mandi as all of us were curious to know about it from him since he was involved in its inception. Mandi is an event organised by NITIE where thousands of students sell educational items in the streets of Mumbai. We discussed a lot about Mandi, how it is organised, promoted and also how we could expand and make its scale bigger in the future.

The soft ball that he gave us before was also a globe and the butterfly was a balancing butterfly which could be kept on our fingertip and it would never fall. These can be used to teach kids while playing with them. These are some of the stuff sold during Mandi. We were amazed to see how these innovative ideas can used to educate people and at the same time make money.

He then showed us Newton's cradle which can be used to teach different priciples of physics. It was used by 4 Production Engineering students a few years back as their college project for every subject. They also sold 5000 units of it while in college and earned money out of it. The professor told us that just like them, we should earn while we learn. That there's nothing wrong in doing "dhandha" and earning money ethically. After paying so much fees for an MBA education if we don't earn money, then there's something wrong with us. His funda goes as:

"Soacho.. Becho ! Becho.. Seekho !! Seekho .. Soacho !!!
Aaj Ki roti...Aaj hee kamyaenghae !"

With his unconventional and desi style of teaching I was really in awe of him. So, when he said that he was also a tech-savvy person and used blogs to teach his students, I was really astonished. I had a very enriching and fun experience with Dr. Mandi. Btw, his real name is T. Prasad. I look forward to many more interactions with him...

Happy "Dhandha"ying and blogging!
